Concert Band is for 7th and 8th graders who have previous experience
playing a band instrument. This class meets daily. Students in
Concert Band will give several concerts a year and will be considered
the premier band ensemble at Capitol Hill. To accomplish this goal,
students will experience a curriculum that is rich, varied and
rigorous.
To meet and exceed the Minnesota state standards for
music, students will be accountable for learning fundamental skills.
This includes note reading, understanding of rhythms, scale skills and
sight reading skills. In addition, students will write in a reflective
journal. This journal will be their own personal account of how music
influences their daily life. Creating an awareness of how powerful
music can be in their lives is what I’m aiming for as an educator. I
will provide a structure for this weekly reflection.
I have made an aggressive plan for performing this year! Our first concert is Thursday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Capitol Hill Gym. We will be sharing that concert with the Rondo African Music Ensemble.
I plan to take the Concert Band to the State Capitol to perform in December. It's a concert that I've done with groups in the past and it's pretty spectacular! More info to come on that as the date becomes solid.
Additionally, we'll have the usual January and May concerts. Any other ideas for performance venues are welcomed!
We're hard at work in class reviewing our fundamentals, getting back in shape as a performing ensemble and learning a few new tunes for our first concert.
I look forward to seeing you all again this year.
