Enrichment Opportunities
Science Olympiad:
Junior high students work with a parent leader participating in this national competition. Fifteen-member teams compete in a series of events covering a wide spectrum of science topics at a regional competition in February.
Destination Imagination:
Students work with a parent leader from January through March to creatively solve a complex problem and present their solution in a regional competition held in March.
Math Team:
A team of 25 junior high students participates in this afterschool activity which includes 5 Math League meets and statewide competition. Capitol Hill has won the state competition and sent students on to national level competition in past years.
Debate Team:
Students from the 8th grade Debate classes participate in after school competitions against other schools.
Community Education Classes:
The Rondo Center Community Education Program offers a variety of classes throughout the year. Flyers are generally sent home with students, but are also available in the office. There is no transportation provided and a minimal fee is charged. Please contact the Community Education office at 651-325-2672 to find out more about the wonderful opportunities available to your child.
Tutoring
Various teachers hold after school tutoring, in addition to the clubs run by Community Education. If you feel your child needs assistance, please contact their classroom teacher to find out what is available.
Athletics:
Athletic programs are available for students in grades 7 and 8. These are interscholastic programs competing against other Saint Paul Public schools. Each season runs for approximately 9 weeks. Capitol Hill participates in the following sports:
Fall flag football, volleyball, soccer
Winter basketball, wrestling
Spring baseball, softball, track and field, badminton
Students must have a current physical on file with the school nurse in order to participate. In addition there is a fee for participation; this fee is waived for students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.
Instrumental Music Program:
Capitol Hill offers a variety of instrumental music programs: Suzuki Violin and Cello, Orchestra, and Band. Interested students are assigned instruments after meeting with the Instrumental Music Teacher. Parents / guardians then rent or purchase instruments for their child from area music stores.
