Mr. Howard: Social Studies           Weekly Update Hello! Well...it's only taken me two weeks to get my web page up and running.  Thanks for your patience as I get settled into my new job here at Capitol Hill. Mygoal is that this site will become a place for parents to quickly learn what?s happening in 7th grade Social Studies (a.k.a. ?U.S. History?), check how well their student is succeeding, and offer resources for enhancing the learning experience. Please check back often for weekly classroom updates. ______________________________________________________ Week 2   (9/10 to 9/14) This week we focused on early Native American people groups present in North America prior to European contact. We discussed: ·        Theories about pre-historic migration to North America from Asia. ·        The ?five features of civilization? offered by our textbook. (Ask them to describe and explain them to you.) ·        Native American societies found in North America during European exploration. On Tuesday, September 11th, (the 6th anniversary of the terrorist attacks) we watched a video about ?heroes? and the sacrifices they made to save others on that terrible day.  After the video, students shared stories about their own ?acts of bravery.? NEXT WEEK We will be learning about: ·        The discovery and colonization of North America by European explorers. ·        The Atlantic trade-triangle that grew after the discovery of North America. ·        The ?Middle Passage? experience endured by Africans forced into slavery. ______________________________________________________ Week 1   (9/4 to 9/7) Having 160+ students (my highest number ever) makes it necessary for me to get to know them and establish ground rules for having a safe and productive classroom.  Creating a ?safe? classroom means more than guarding physical safety; it means creating respectful environment where students can feel free to inquire and express ideas without fear.  Ask your student to explain what this means. It?s also important for 7th graders to learn about themselves.  Last week, they discovered if they were visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners.  It shouldn?t surprise anyone that 90% of our students are strong  kinesthetic learners (they can?t sit still); this will likely change as they mature. It may be that their secondary learning-style preference will strengthen as they grow. Be sure to ask them about the information they were to bring home. It contained the following: ·        A brief article about learning styles in young learners. ·        The test showing their results. ·        ?Study Tips? for their particular learning style. (Have them place this on the refrigerator door to remind them of ways to ?study best? in their style.)French French 1 "Devoirs" is homework.
