School Nurse
I am so fortunate to be working in my 5th year as the Licensed School Nurse at Capitol Hill. Thanks to the support of our Site Council, PTO, staff and administration, I am scheduled in the building Monday-Friday to provide health care to our 1,040 students of which over 470 have active health conditions. This includes everything from abrasions and broken bones to chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes to potentially life threatening conditions such as allergies and anaphylaxis. My educational preparation includes a Master's degree in Nursing, Doctoral degrees in Education and Organizational Leadership, and a Fellow in School Nursing. I have 30 years experience as a nationally certified Nurse Practitioner, primarily working in clinic and hospital settings. I have worked as a graduate school nurse educator at a local University, and have published nursing related books and research articles. I have served on Federal and State health services and other community related Boards of Directors. I am trained in the areas of First Aide, CPR, and Automatic External Defibrillator use. I work as a Nurse Practitioner at a local Urgent Care on week-ends. Research completed over the past 4 years at Capitol Hill have been in the areas of asthma and diabetes.
It is proven that healthy children are better learners! A skilled nursing assessment, intervention, and evaluatory process within an educative, research-based, nurturing, transcultural, and advocating framework are integrated into every individual daily visit with your child in effort to assure their urgent and non-urgent health needs are met. The nurse office practice setting is grounded within the theoretical framework of self-care. The goal for each child is to understand why they are coming to the nurse office, what will be done interdependently and independently with them, to understand and manage their health condition within the context of their age and capability, and to encourage them to focus on a healthy life-style. I look forward to working collaboratively with your child, you, your child's teacher, and health care providers to assure your child's success at Capitol Hill.
