Art Adventure at Capitol Hill

C. Hunter - The Wash
  • Art Adventure is a program of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts that brings art and culture out of the museum into the classroom.

The program encourages "Art Thinking," helping to develop critical thinking skills through student-directed discussions about art.

    Volunteer Now!

  • Volunteer to Be a “Picture Person”

Art Adventure volunteers (a.k.a. “Picture People”) are needed to lead discussions in 1st through 4th grade classrooms about works of art from MIA’s collection. Students discuss the artwork at school then see the pieces in person during fieldtrips to the museum.

All volunteers typically present two art pieces to at least two classrooms, including their own child's and others in the same grade. Sessions last about 30 minutes - and the students do almost all of the talking!

2nd and 3rd grades participate in Art Adventure during the Fall. Grades 1 and 4 have Art Adventure during the Spring.

  • Picture People Training

Most Picture People attend a free, 2.5 hour training session at MIA, which covers the art pieces to be presented as well as tips on how to lead student discussions. All three (3) training options are listed here:

    1.     MIA Training:  Attend an upcoming MIA-sponsored training session.  (Schedule and registration links are below.)

    2.     Capitol Hill Training:  Attend a session for Capitol Hill Picture People only lead by co-coordinator Mary Frankson at MIA on Sunday, February 5 from 1:30 – 3 pm. Contact Mary at mcneff.frankson@gmail.com to confirm participation.

    3.     Self-Preparation: (Recommended mainly for experienced Picture People.): Review the Cultural Reflections in Art booklet and see the art on your own.
