Concert Band
Concert Band is for 7th and 8th graders who have previous experience playing a band instrument.  This class meets daily.   Students in Concert Band will give several concerts a year and will be considered the premier band ensemble at Capitol Hill.  To accomplish this goal, students will experience a curriculum that is rich, varied and rigorous.

To meet and exceed the Minnesota state standards for music,  students will be accountable for learning fundamental skills.  This includes note reading, understanding of rhythms, scale skills and sight reading skills.  In addition, students will write in a reflective journal.  This journal will be their own personal account of how music influences their daily life.  Creating an awareness of how powerful music can be in their lives is what I’m aiming for as an educator.  I will provide a structure for this weekly reflection.

Weekly assignments will be posted below.

Practice Assignmnet for the week of October 15
This week is a short week for all of us.  Students should be practicing three scales by now:  Bb, Eb and F concert.  We have taken playing exams on the Bb and Eb concert scales.  Next week (week of October 22)  students will play the F concert scale memorized.

We now have four band tunes that we rehearse regularly:  Calypso Carnival, Captain Dane, Sundance and Anthem for a Centennial.  All are sounding GREAT!  Students have practice parts so they can practice these at home.

Every Friday students are journaling about the music they played, heard or thought about during the week.  Also, this is a forum for them to express their view of how things are going in band. It's great to get in on their side of things!

As always, it's an open door policy.  Drop in anytime and hear us!  We practice daily from 9:00-9:45.

Practice Assignmnet for week of September 27-October 3
We're continuing to work on preparing band music.  Students should be practicing
"Sundance", "Anthem for a Centennial" and "The Simpsons".  "The Simpsons" is the most challenging of the three tunes so far.

Playing exam next week:  Eb concert scale.  Memorized.

Journal writing every Friday.  Students made their first entry last Friday.  Very impressive!  Students need to have their own journal for writing.  The journals are kept here.
