 | Week of 4/21/2008 The pocket books are pretty much finished and now we have to fill them. The students will fill them with labeled examples of a: limerick, haiku, free verse, parody, narrative, lyric and concrete poem. In addition they will find examples of a couplet, a tercet, and a poem written in quatrain. They also need to highlight or find examples of several poetic devices including: end rhyme, internal rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, simile, metaphor, and repetition. An explanation of the poetic device or kind of poem should be written either on the back or on the front of the poem. I am providing copies of the poems that they memorized to include in their books. I will return the poems that they have turned in (haiku, parody and narrative) so that they can be placed in the pockets. I have encouraged the students to include poems by some of the poets we discussed. They are Langston Hughes, Christina Rossetti, and Emily Dickinson. The books should have an attractive cover with ornate lettering and some kind of drawing or design. The poems may be hand-written or word-processed. They can have illustrations on them or borders. The poet's name must be included. Students may include original poems if they would like. If someone likes a particular topic (animals, love, holidays, etc.) or a particular poet, s/he may focus on that topic or poet. Students may include favorite poems as well. They can include as many extra poems as they would like. Unfortunately, they will not have access to printing poems at school. However, they can print them outside of school then trim them so they fit into the pockets. We will shoot for a deadline of this Friday.
